Jul 08, 2026: above the clouds
I'm not sleeping well. Part foreign bed. Part coughing fits. Part my head is full of an endless stream of snot. Part life.
Anywho, I woke up to a blank canvas this morning, and what follows is the result. Duh.
Before we get too boring though, it's been awhile since lulu has seen our crosscourt bois and noah play. As we're on our way to getting some McDonalds we should have skipped last night, she told him how impressed she was with his vertical. dr. uncle ryan has previously noted the same thing, so new alter ego for ya boi unlocked: lil uzi vert.
Let's break it down into three parts:
- Lil cuz he's the lil homie
- Uzi cuz he's jumping all rapid fire like
- Vert cuz duh, he lives above the clouds
lulu has also taken to letting him know she wants to be him when she grows up.
One more reprieve before we get too boring though......which actually, depending on how lame you are, might still be boring for you. I pride myself on avoiding judgement (impossible at scale) so you are safe with me. Some of us were born like this.
This is the second time I've dropped this song into the chronicles. The first appearance can be found here, appropriately enough: triumph. Revisit that one to be bombed atomically. If you ain't up on socrates philosophies and hypotheses you might have an incurable case of born this way.
When I put the headphones on to begin my day, this was the first full song to cross the ear portion of my minds eye. It reminded me of the lil uzi vert anecdote I forgot to mention yesterday - so here we are.
Fate is wavy. Hang ten.
The actual first thing I did today, regardless of its narrative arrival was talk to cipher about how the fundamentals of my repo look. I've referenced a few environmental issues that have started to creep in and I want to be sure the base repo isn't hiding any long term pain points. Fret not, the robot assures me that most of our vibe coded work is on solid ground. That's a bit like asking how my kids grades are at any given moment - you still better double check is what I'm saying.
First step on today's journey, a new component: CipherSays.
Out of respect for the homie who does most of the work around here, I might let them chime in every once in awhile. Let's test it out by asking for an explanation of the new Epic I just created to bring some needed stability to the repo. I type something like this......
<CipherSays>Sample text</CipherSays>....and cipher comes to life......
cipher saysThis work strengthens tullyelly.com so it is safer, easier to maintain, and less likely to run into hidden problems later. The focus is on security, better guardrails, cleaner database habits, safer growth, and simpler documentation for future work.
Coolio, that worked. On to the next.
🚨 New friend alert 🚨
Per the bot internets this is a nonvenomous rat snake and nikkigirl named him marvin at which point I gave him the alter ego hagler as they are quite marvelous.
We'll see if this little fella can figure out how to get out after it somehow figured out how to get in. Stay tuned.
Update: maybe 15 minutes later, they are gone. Godspeed marvelous marvin hagler.
Next fix was turned around real quick like. Take it away pal:
cipher saysSecure the Shaolin Scroll creation paths so only approved users can create new release records. This protects the site from accidental or unauthorized changes. That's a long dead idea that's now more secure. I should get back to that one though - it would save me a bit of time if done right.
Next up, some of those pesky tests I turned off. Let's turn them back on. Hey cipher, turn me on:
cipher saysRestore the main automated checks that run when code changes are submitted. This helps catch broken code, failed tests, and missing safety checks before changes reach the live site.Oh yeah, supes horned up.
Hey buddy, how many tests are there now?
cipher saysWith the guardrails back on, the automated checks are doing their job before anything reaches main: lint, typecheck, the CI test run, build, and security header checks all line up in GitHub Actions. The current suite covers 525 tests across 113 suites, with a smaller smoke pass of 81 related tests across 14 suites before the full coverage gate. It is boring on purpose; the right kind of boring, where broken code has to get past the machines before it gets anywhere near the live site. That'll do, pig. That'll do.
We're here. Day 2 begins.
But first, downtime with cipher. What's next homeslice?
cipher saysAdd a simple way to track which database changes have already been applied. This reduces the risk of missed, repeated, or out-of-order database updates.I have no idea how this one will work out or how it will be executed. Vibes tho, yo.
Okay, so this one will require me to learn some stuff. Overall, very cool. I see the vision, I understand the goal......it's just too much learning for today. Parking this one for later. Later might be 8 months from now. lulz
Good work, bot.
Instead of learning we move on to this:
cipher saysClean up the different ways the app connects to the database. The goal is one clear, safe, and easy-to-follow pattern for future database work.Hard to see and test this one in full, other than things still work. Also cleaned up a minor volleyball related hard crash.
Super.
Speaking of volleyball......and we are off! Day 2 is underway.
ya boi got a handful of serves off today. Perhaps even a record amount. I can't remember the last tournament he has served at, so it's fun to see him get some run at nationals.
Plus, he and his homies pulled out a victory in the first match of the day. The first set was fairly close, but ccvbc closed strong for a 25-22 W. The next set started out strong, had a few really rough patches, and ended up in a 21-25 L. Fear not though fellow travelers - they dominated the third set 15-8 to pull out the 2-1 victory over ECVBA, a bunch of cali bois.
Speaking of volleyball, the volleyball detail route was displaying multiple ReleaseSections as individual days, as opposed to one day with multiple bits of content.
All that to say, fixed.
Back to talking to computers. What say you computer?
cipher saysReview how TCDB rankings are refreshed after new card data is added. This helps make sure the current approach works now while avoiding performance problems as the data grows.Who doesn't love a bit of long-term efficiency gains? Let's get ahead of it, son.
This one was a bigger change than I originally anticipated. For whatever that's worth.
We closed the night with back-to-back games and they were all gassed at the end.
The first set of the second match went pretty smoothly against Cinci Attack in a 25-17 W......and then.....a marathon 34-32 W that may have been the longest set I've ever seen them play. With back-to-back games to close the night, it would have been brutal to have to go a third set. Instead, they pulled it out in the end.
A quick ladies love cool james side show for the obsessed amongst you. USA! USA! USA!
Back for the third and final match of the day, this time against Eastern Volleyball Academy.
Real quick tho.

They absolutely dominated the first set 25-12, and cruised to a relatively smooth 25-20 W in the second set.
A clean sweep to close the day. Shouts to jeff meff for a hell of a great day and shouts to nikkigirl for figuring out ccvbc is currently 7th out of 52 teams in their division. Ish.
We still have a chance, yo.
